Essential

Tipping in Ireland is a common practice. If a waiter comes to your table, expect to pay a 10 percent to 15 percent tip. If you eat at the counter in a pub, a tip is not required. Check your receipt to verify the tip was not automatically included before leaving one on the table.

Making Reservations

During high season, make reservations for the finer establishments at which you plan to dine. Calling a couple days ahead of time tends to be sufficient but on weekends, plan well in advance.

Most guesthouses and manors (and some B&Bs) serve an evening meal. This can be a rewarding way to experience local cuisine. Additionally, most B&B and guesthouse hosts can recommend the best places to eat.

While credit cards might be accepted in larger restaurants, bring sufficient cash for smaller dining venues, such as local pubs, family restaurants, and B&Bs. Most dinners are served after 6:30 P.M. and until 9 P.M. in pubs. Most pubs stop serving drinks at midnight, while others stop at 2 A.M.
