Kinsale
In a vote, this small fishing village would undoubtedly top the list of Ireland's most picturesque towns. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Bandry River meant a rocky past with a myriad of controlling governments taxing its ports. Now harmonious in every sense and offering a variety of activities (yachting, golf, fishing, and sailing), the village boasts international regattas, along with a Festival of Fine Foods and a Jazz Festival in October. An enthralling Arts Festival takes place each July. The main sights of the city are the Desmond Castle, often called the “French Prison” (now a wine museum), Saint Multose Church, the Old Market House Museum, and Charles Fort, located outside of town on the road past Summercove.

The parapets are dangerous to climb but offer stellar views of the Kinsale Harbor. If you are into archaeological exploration, drive down the road, across the river to a less-visited star fort called James Fort. A path known as the “Scilly Walk” connects the forts to Kinsale.
