The First Book of the Bible is Genesis, called by its first word—Bereishis—in Hebrew. The Medrash says that if God merely intended to teach His Commandments to the Jewish People, He could have skipped right to the Book of Exodus—and “passed over” most of what happened in Egypt, as well. According to the Medrash, God wanted to teach humanity that He Created the world and He ultimately controls our destiny. You might want to have a Bible handy while reading this chapter, to see the quoted verses in context.
