Thanks to all of the ongoing scholarship of the last millennium, a person sitting down to learn Torah today isn't left on his own to figure out what a passage means. Today, to study the Five Books of the Torah means to access a wide range of commentaries. Studying the Talmud invites one to access a different set of commentaries, along with multiple legal codes that make it easier to understand how to apply the Talmud's teaching in daily life.
