Carlos Castaneda (Taisha Abelar and Florinda Donner-Grau) When The Teachings of Don Juan was released in 1968, Carlos Castaneda became a favorite of the spiritual seekers of the time. His stories of meeting a Toltec nagual in the desert of northern Mexico, and his use of peyote and other mind-altering plants, inspired an entire subculture. There are nine books by Castaneda.
