Unlike some diseases that tend to occur with age, thyroid disorders do not discriminate against the young. Thyroid disorders can strike children, even newborns, just as easily as they can occur in adulthood. While thyroid disease in children used to be a common cause of mental retardation, today there is greater awareness — and earlier screenings — to detect thyroid disease before it poses a serious problem.
