A heart-healthy diet is usually recommended for autoimmune thyroid disease. The most common autoimmune thyroid diseases are Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to have other autoimmune diseases coexisting with autoimmune thyroid disease. An autoimmune disease is when your body makes antibodies toward your own tissue. This can happen in many places in the body and cause many symptoms and coexisting dietary and medical needs. Depending on the other diseases, a heart-healthy diet may not be enough. You need to follow nutritional and dietary recommendations for all of your diseases. Do not be afraid to get help from your medical team, especially your registered dietitian. Knowing what to do about nutrition concerns of the comorbidities and following the recommended advice will play a large part in keeping yourself healthy.
