Tibetan Chakras

The chakras previously described are related to Hindu Tantra. Tibetan Tantra recognizes a different set of chakras — consisting of a variable number from four to ten. As explained earlier, the sahasrara (located at the top of the head) is considered the most important chakra in Hindu Tantra, symbolizing the highest state of consciousness. The opposite is true with Tibetan chakras: The root chakra is at the top of the head, and you progress downward toward the heart for higher states of consciousness.

In addition to chakras recognized by Hindu Tantra and Tibetan Tantra, there are also chakras observed by other religions and philosophies. In Peru, the Q'ero tribe recognizes nine chakras, while certain Native American tribes believe the lowest chakra is actually at the very tip of the genitals.
