Family Ice Cream

To make this ice cream, you must have immaculately clean coffee cans. Remember, when the ice cream becomes aerated, it will expand, so be sure to leave room in the container.

¾ cup half-and-half

6 tablespoons Splenda

½ cup Fresh Fruit Sauce (page 273)

1-pound coffee can with plastic lid

2-pound coffee can with plastic lid

Cracked ice

Kosher salt

  • Mix the half-and-half, Splenda, and Fresh Fruit Sauce together and place in the 1-pound can. Close the lid tightly. Put it in the 2-pound can.

  • Fill the sides of the 2-pound can with alternating layers of cracked ice and salt until you get to the top. Close the top lid tightly. Seat the children on the floor and have them “churn” the ice cream by rolling the tin around, back and forth. Soon the ice cream will thicken and stop moving in the coffee can, and — WOW! Fresh ice cream! Enjoy!
