Reading texts can be an active or passive experience, similar to determining your behavior inside class as an active or passive listener. Furthermore, taking notes when you read from a text is different than classroom note-taking. Reading texts requires a more concentrated focus since the words themselves are teaching you, rather than a live person at the front of a classroom.
