Financial Reporting to the State
Most states require an annual report from every corporation, be they for-profit or nonprofit. They use forms that have similar requirements as the federal government, though states generally do not ask for as much detail.
If you set up all your financial reporting to comply with the federal standards as used in the IRS Form 990, it will be easy to extract from that information what you need to comply with the state requests. In the packet of information that came along with your business license (not your incorporation!), you will find all the information you will need to make these very important yearly or quarterly reports.
If you have any questions about the state reporting requirements, call the general information number in the packet. The number is very likely on the top of the business license itself.
If your state offers the option of quarterly versus yearly reporting, make certain your gross revenues are within the parameters offered. You do not want to be declared delinquent on taxes because you checked the incorrect box.
