Direct Appeals to Existing Contacts

From a fundraising perspective, your existing contacts are the most important people in your universe. They will form the base, the core, of all subsequent fundraising activities.

Begin thinking about establishing and maintaining a database designed for nonprofits. One of the best databases in terms of quality and functionality is Kintera, a system developed and maintained by Blackbaud (www.kintera.com). At the other end of the spectrum is an excellent program designed and maintained for start-up nonprofits that may not have the money to spend on a Kintera system. It is the Organizer's Database (www.organizersdb.org).

Now you must establish a database to track your existing contacts, as well as the future contacts that will become your donor base. As simple as it may sound, the only way people will know that you need money is if you tell them. You must maintain a current, accurate list of everyone who needs to know about your work.

Special Perks

Update your database on everything you are doing so they continue to feel part of the exciting adventure. Consider offering special meetings or tours limited to your donors and supporters. Tours and one-on-one lunches with board members or coordinators are a great way to thank these people for their support and provide the personal attention that is essential to maintaining long-term relationships.

Keeping to a Schedule

Your organization needs to become as much a part of the families of your supporters as are their kids and pets. If you plan to send out holiday notices or solicitations, make it a priority to do so on time. If you intend to have members-only receptions during the year, do not forget to budget those activities into your yearly plans. Your early supporters will be the base of all your subsequent fundraising activities.
