What's in a Name?

To someone who understands numerology, a name reveals a great deal about a given individual. Numbers define your personality, your role in life, and to some extent your destiny. If you change your name, as many actors and writers do, your life will change, too.

What does your name say about you? To find out, write down your full birth name. Then refer to the table of number-letter correspondences above and assign numbers to the letters in your name. Numerologists consider vowels to have different meanings than consonants. Therefore, you'll want to distinguish between the numbers that relate to vowels and those that relate to consonants; for example:

The next step is to add the numbers, starting with the vowels. In the name above, the vowel numbers total 28. The sum of the consonants is 56. To produce a single-digit number as shown in the table of number-letter correspondences, add the digits in each two-digit number together until you get a single-digit number. For example, if you add 2 + 8 (the vowel total) you get 10; you'll need to add 1 + 0 to reduce the sum to a single-digit number:1. Repeat this procedure for the consonants. When you add 5 + 6 together, the result is 11. You could add 1 + 1 to get 2, but numerologists usually don't reduce the double numbers.

Double numbers — 11, 22, and so on — are called master numbers. These numbers are considered to resonate at a higher vibration that reflects a higher level of consciousness. People whose names contain master numbers may experience greater challenges, responsibilities, opportunities, and achievements in their lives.

Your Soul Urge

The sum of your vowels is considered the soul urge. Sometimes called your motivation number, it corresponds to your inner desires, the fundamental urge or energy that propels you to act. It indicates who you are at your deepest level, your innate abilities, emotions, hopes, needs, and dreams. In astrology, this correlates with your moon and its position in the birth chart.

If your soul urge number is one, as in the example above, you tend to be independent and self-motivated. If two is your number, you're likely to be cooperative and flexible, willing to consider other people as well as yourself.

Your Outer Personality

The number that results from the sum of your consonants is called your outer personality number. This is the face you show to the world and corresponds to your sun in astrology. Your public image, the way you behave in social situations, and the way you like to view yourself are all described by this number.

For example, if your outer personality number is three, you're sociable and expansive, and you express yourself in creative ways. If the sum of your consonants is four, you tend to be practical, dependable, and orderly.

Your Destiny

Numerologists call the sum of all the letters in your name your destiny number. Although this may sound rather fatalistic, it really shows your objective in life or your life work. Many people express this through their careers, but it could be more accurately thought of as your “work” not your “job.” An artist, for instance, might earn a living as a computer programmer, even though his true raison d'être is to create works of beauty.

If your destiny number is five, your purpose in life is to teach others, to communicate ideas, and to encourage change and personal growth. A person whose destiny number is six may devote herself to nurturing a family and providing a comfortable, beautiful home for others to enjoy.
