Days of the Week

To help you review the ordinal numbers, how about learning the days of the week? The following list answers the question Cuáles son los días de la semana? (What are the days of the week?) For a list of days of the week, refer to the table that follows.

El lunes es el primer día de la semana. Monday is the first day of the week.
El domingo es el séptimo día de la semana. Tuesday is the second day of the week.
El martes es el segundo día de la semana. Wednesday is the third day of the week.
El miércoles es el tercer día de la semana. Thursday is the fourth day of the week.
El jueves es el cuarto día de la semana. Friday is the fifth day of the week.
El viernes es el quinto día de la semana. Saturday is the sixth day of the week.
El sábado es el sexto día de la semana. Sunday is the seventh day of the week.

The following set of examples illustrates how these vocabulary words work within the Spanish sentence:

Esta semana he estado enfermo con un resfriado. This week I have been sick with a head cold.
Toda la semana pasada, estuve de vacaciones. I was on vacation all last week.
Estaré en las Islas Galápagos la semana próxima. I will be in the Galápagos Islands next week.
Este año tendré un empleo nuevo. This year I will have a new job.
El año pasado, estaba en Santo Domingo. Last year I was in Santo Domingo.
El próximo año, estaré en Madrid. Next year, I will be in Madrid.

To use ser in expressing time and days of the week, follow the format of the following question and answer: Qué día es hoy? (What day is it today?) Hoy es lunes. (Today is Monday.) Consequently, you would say mañana es martes, en dos días es miércoles, en tres días es jueves, and so on.

You know how to say what day it is, but what about the date? In Spanish, the date is known as la fecha: Cuál es la fecha de hoy? (Which is the date today?) Hoy es lunes, el catorce de junio. (Today is Monday, June 14.) De hoy en ocho días, es martes, el veintidos de junio. (Eight days from today, it is Tuesday, June 22.)
