Things to Do at Home

So far you've learned a lot of verbs for when you're out and about traveling, shopping, or working. Here are some everyday verbs for the things you and your family do at home.

  • cocinar: to cook

  • descansar: to rest

  • dormir: to sleep

  • jugar: to play

  • COCINAR: to cook

    yo cocino (koh-SEE-noh)

    tú cocinas (koh-SEE-nahs)

    él, ella, usted cocina (koh-SEE-nah)

    nosotros cocinamos (koh-see-NAH-mohs)

    vosotros cocináis (koh-see-NAHYS)

    ellos, ellas, ustedes cocinan (koh-SEE-nahn)

    Yo cocino espinacas con ajo.

    I cook spinach with garlic.

    Mario cocina el desayuno los sábados.

    Mario cooks breakfast every Saturday.

    Ramona y Oswald cocinan de vez en cuando.

    Ramona and Oswald cook once in a while.

    DESCANSAR: to rest

    yo descanso (dehs-KAHN-soh)

    My husband sleeps on his back.

    They take a siesta.

    Tú duermes a pierna suelta.

    You sleep like a log.

    There are a number of words in Spanish for bedroom, including cuarto de dormir, habitación, dormitorio, and recámara. Each one is popular in particular regions, but any one will get you understood.

    JUGAR: to play

    yo juego (HWEH-goh)

    tú juegas (HWEH-gahs)

    él, ella, usted juega (HWEH-gah)

    nosotros jugamos (hoo-GAH-mohs)

    vosotros jugáis (hoo-GAHYS)

    ellos, ellas, ustedes juegan (HWEH-gahn)

    Juego al tenis con mi hermano.

    I play tennis with my brother.

    Juegan a los naipes cada sábado a la medianoche.

    They play cards every Saturday at midnight.

    Note that the verb jugar is used to talk about playing a game or sport. It is not used to talk about playing a musical instrument. In that instance you would use the verb tocar, to touch. Jugar is also not used in many of the idiomatic ways “to play” is used in English. For example, you would not use jugar to say, “play a role,” “play it safe,” or “play dead.” See Chapter 14 for these and other idiomatic phrases.
