Necessary Sacrifices

Troubleshooting isn't always fun. Sometimes you'll have to get rid of a perfectly good line or word simply because that's what the song needs. There will come a time when you have to cut out the best line in the song because it doesn't fit, doesn't rhyme, or doesn't belong.

Remember that it's the song that's important. Don't let stubbornness stop you from getting a cut. Always be willing to examine your options. Would you really want to lose out on a payday just because you couldn't find a rhyme for “purple” and refused to put your main character in a blue dress?

Get used to making the necessary sacrifices and looking at the big picture; when you do start getting cuts, publishers, producers, and recording artists are going to commit far more horrible atrocities to your songs than you ever envisioned.

Imagine someone taking out a line in your song that mentions a particular brand of vehicle that's in competition with the kind of vehicle the artist is paid to endorse. Now imagine someone replacing your line with an awful line that doesn't make sense and doing so without even asking you to rewrite the line in a way that works. Imagine that the song becomes a big hit and gets played a lot on the radio. Every time you hear it, you think “Oh, my God. That line is horrible and the whole world thinks I wrote it.” Now imagine the size of the checks you receive for the song. Imagine a lot of zeroes on them. It can't repair the sense of hurt and violation, but it sure helps.
