Making a Commitment

If you're actually thinking of trying to make a career of songwriting, there is really only one way to do it — to do it ALL THE WAY. You have to make and keep a commitment to songwriting, be prepared to make sacrifices, and do so with the understanding that you have better odds of winning a casino jackpot.

Great songwriters leave Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles every day, heads hung low, never to return. However, some songwriters who are pretty good end up getting the jobs that the great ones missed because they made the commitment, did everything they had to do, and followed through without stopping for anything. Imagine going through basic training with no drill instructor to make you do all the things that you must do and learn all the things that you must learn. Can you be that tough on yourself?

Still willing to go for the high stakes?

Sit down and have a talk with yourself. Ask yourself what you're willing to give up to be a songwriter. Talk it over with family and friends; make sure you have the support you'll need to do this. If you still want to try, good luck and read on.
