The transformation of oils into soap, called saponification, can only happen through the interaction of a lye solution with oils. Used carelessly, lye can cause severe burns and serious injury. Even when extreme care is taken, there is a potential for injury. It is impossible to overemphasize the necessity of smart safety practices when handling lye, lye solutions, raw, and “young” soap. This chapter describes how to make lye soap safely at home.
