Getting the Most Out of a Garden

In this garden plan we are assuming you have an area of soil that is ready to be planted. If you do not, you can make a raised bed out of wood, cement blocks, or rocks, or bring in soil and plant in containers.

Both approaches will add to the cost unless you can be creative with finding inexpensive materials. Any extra seeds can be kept in a cool, dry place and used the following year. Note prices may vary a little depending on where you live and the time of year.

List of items needed:

  • Three tomato plants ($10.50)

  • Six basil plants ($3.00)

  • Four pepper plants ($3.00)

  • Four cabbage plants ($3.00)

  • Four broccoli plants ($3.00)

  • Four marigold plants ($2.00)

  • Three cucumber plants or one packet seeds ($4.50)

  • Six lettuce plants ($3.00)

  • One packet peas seeds ($3.00)

  • One packet bean seeds ($3.00)

  • One packet radish seeds ($3.00)

  • One packet beet seeds ($3.00)

  • One packet carrot seeds ($3.00)

  • One packet spinach seeds ($3.00)

If you wanted, you could exchange some or all of the cabbage or broccoli with cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, or kale plants.
