Is a Small Dog Right for You?
Whether a small dog is appropriate for you depends on what you are looking for in a dog. If you need an intimidating guardian for your property small is not a good choice. If you're looking for a running partner as you train for the marathon, small won't do. However, if you're in the market for a companion, playmate, and love object, small is terrific. Before you make a decision affecting you, your family, or another animal, consider some additional factors.
Regardless of its size, your dog will need training to make it a happy confident dog that you can take with you anywhere. While small dogs are admittedly easy to spoil, it is still easier to train a ten-pound dog than a 100-pound dog. Training goes hand in hand with the toy dog's need for protection. Mastering the basic obedience commands can save its life.
Just because you live in a small apartment or condo does not mean that any small dog will do. Some crave regular exercise, like the highly energetic Parson Russell terrier. For most, a daily walk around the block will fit the bill; for some, more energetic romps in the park or participation in dog sports such as hunting and tracking trials, agility, or fly ball would provide a great outlet for all that energy.
Grooming requirements and costs are another factor that must be taken into account. Some, like the shih tzu, poodle, and bichon frise, need a great deal of professional grooming. Do some research at local grooming salons to determine whether or not your budget will bear the cost of professional grooming.
There are also the costs of vet care and obedience training; pet sitters or boarding costs if you need to travel without your pet; licensing; food and treats (a necessity when training); home-grooming supplies and cleaning products (for those unavoidable accidents); flea and tick products; leashes and collars; and protective clothing for smooth-haired breeds in winter.
Senior citizens and small dogs are a match made in heaven. Medical research has proven than pet ownership leads to lower blood pressure and lessened stress levels. Daily walks with a canine companion provide an opportunity for needed exercise and socialization. Small dogs offer companionship and security to seniors as well. No one can tell what size your dog is when it barks from behind a closed door at an unwelcome visitor!
