Around Town
Just as every great journey begins with one small step, making little Sassy a seasoned traveler begins with taking her on everyday outings around town. Of course, the temperature outdoors must first be taken into account. If it's too hot or cold, for safety's sake, she'll have to stay home.
If you plan to tote her in her special handbag, it's a good idea to get her used to it before you embark. Start by practicing at home, placing her in the bag for a few minutes at a time, making sure she has a comfy mat inside. Some pet bags come already equipped with cushy fleece pads. Give her a treat while she's getting used to it and then go about your business with your household activities. Next, take her out in the yard and carry her around inside it, then reward her again.
It's fun to take a dog where you know it will be welcomed. Whether your little dog is in a bag or on a leash, the pet store is a good destination to begin travel training. Everyone there likes dogs, and you can let your little friend pick out her own treat as a reward for her good behavior. Tiny dogs in tote bags can go just about anywhere, from the bank to the post office to the flower shop, but leashed dogs are more restricted.
When you use a drive-up teller at the bank or get a cup of coffee at the drive-through window, the person who assists you will often offer a biscuit to your dog. Outdoor events like fairs, carnivals, and flea markets are also fun for small dogs and offer great opportunities for socialization as well.
No matter how short the trip, always bring a leash, bottled water, and a bowl (collapsible ones are great), plastic poop bags, spray cleaner, and paper towels. Better yet, keep your dog's travel kit right in the car so you'll always be ready to pick up and go.
When you go inside a store, never leave your little dog leashed outdoors where it could escape or get stolen.
