Breed Rescue

Most parent clubs listed for individual breeds on the AKC Web site also have a link to rescue organizations for their breed. These groups work hard to find homes for dogs that can no longer remain with their families because of illness, death, divorce, relocation, allergy issues, or because a person had no idea what they were getting into when they brought the dog into their life.

Rescue workers take in purebred dogs from animal shelters or from individuals who can no longer care for them. Some are well organized and well funded, while others may consist of a single individual or small group that makes this activity a huge priority in their lives. Most provide foster care for their rescued dogs, either in private homes or at their own facility, while waiting for the right owner to come along. Those who do not have space for foster care may simply provide referrals.

Rescued dogs are spayed or neutered before they are placed. Dedicated rescuers work hard to clear up any health problems and impart some basic obedience training in these dogs. They screen the dogs for behavior problems and screen prospective adopters, too, ensuring a good fit between dog and owner. Because the dogs they deal with have already been given up or abandoned, rescuers go to great lengths to ensure it doesn't happen again.

In order to make a good match with you and your rescued dog, you first fill out a questionnaire. The rescue group wants to know why you want to adopt, what kind of a living situation you have, whether you have children (and their ages, if you do), and whether you are able and willing to provide the exercise and veterinary care your dog will require. Most require references, and some make home visits. This evaluation process continues when you meet the dog and they watch your initial interactions.

Some rescue dogs have been scarred and traumatized by abuse and neglect. Building the bonds of love and trust takes a lot of patience and understanding, but when a good match is made, it makes it all worthwhile.
