When You Think You're Ready
You're starting to get excited. You've got one special breed on your mind and you're getting a bit impatient to bring that baby home. Slow down. This is a good time to review your homework and answer some vital questions:
Is everyone in your household onboard with this decision?
Will you have time to housebreak, exercise, and train this new family member?
Are your surroundings safe for the new arrival?
Are you ready to make a lifelong commitment to this pet?
Remember that timing is everything. This is a decision that you will have to live with for many years, so don't make the jump until you are ready.
Most breeders shy away from selling puppies at Christmas. The holiday season is just too hectic for you to give your new little family member the attention it deserves, and there are too many dangerous distractions, including Christmas ornaments, tinsel, lights that could be chewed, sweets and people treats that could make it sick, plus a revolving door of company. In all this activity, a pup could easily get injured or lost in the shuffle.
Similarly, if you anticipate moving in the next several months, you would do well to wait until after you relocate. If winters are severe in your region, you'd be better off waiting for milder weather when housebreaking would be a lot easier on both you and your pup.
