Lowchen
In its traditional lion clip with shorn back and bouffant mane and chest, this is another dog associated with the King of Beasts. Originating in the Mediterranean as a bichon type, this companion breed was developed in France and a favorite of fifteenth-century Florentine nobles. Almost extinct in the twentieth century the breed was resurrected by Belgian fanciers. The lowchen is still rather rare but is gaining in popularity as a wonderful companion with a winning disposition. At eight to eighteen pounds, the unique-looking breed is under thirteen inches in height.
Lively and playful, the lowchen doesn't require a lot of exercise. It tends to be a long-living dog, and is peaceful and gentle. However, it is not well suited to small children. It needs a lot of loving attention, and frequent brushing and combing. The lowchen also tends to be pricey compared to other small breeds.
