American Eskimo
This breed comes in three sizes, standard, miniature, and toy. The latter two fit our criteria, with the toy measuring nine to twelve inches and the miniature from twelve to fifteen inches at the withers. Usually snow-white but sometimes cream colored, this breed is America's version of the spitz, bearing all the hallmarks of a typical Nordic dog: prick ears, a thick double coat, and a bushy tail carried proudly over its back. The AKC standard describes it as “intelligent, alert, and friendly, although slightly conservative.” A natural watchdog, the Eskie is protective of its family and often shy with strangers. Once a popular circus dog, it learns tricks easily and excels in obedience training, which will also provide needed socialization. The Eskie is a snow bunny, with a double coat that acts as its snowsuit and needs lots of brushing, especially in the spring and fall when it sheds profusely.
