Cinnamon-Spiced Apple Butter
If you're using a less tart apple, add the brown sugar ¼ cup at a time until you reach desired sweetness. Serve over homemade biscuits or bread.
INGREDIENTS | YIELDS about 3 cups
- 8 large or 12 medium Granny Smith apples
- ½ cup apple cider or juice
- ¾ cup dark brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon allspice
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- Pinch salt
Wash, peel, core, and quarter the apples. Add to the slow cooker along with the cider or juice. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours.
Use an immersion blender to purée the apples. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and salt. Taste for seasoning and adjust if necessary.
Reduce the temperature of the slow cooker to low. Cook uncovered for 2 hours or until the apple butter is thick and dark. Store in the refrigerator for several weeks or freeze until needed.
