In order to appreciate both what Shakespeare wrote and why the plays are as brilliant as they are so frequently said to be, it's useful to know something about the Elizabethan stage and how it developed. It is also important to note that Shakespeare and his contemporaries invented what we now consider the first professional, not to mention commercially successful, modern theater. Today's Broadway shows are the direct descendents of the early plays presented in Elizabethan theaters.
