Shakespeare is an enigma. In Elizabethan times, literacy was dramatically on the rise but those people who could write seldom wrote about the living. As a result, there are few reliable stories about Shakespeare's life. Yet, a bit of detective work in church records and legal documents, as well as a few personal reminiscences from his contemporaries, can give us the “bones” of a skeletal life story to which we can add some “meat.”
