A few of Shakespeare's tragedies can be considered meditations on the spiritual conflict in the soul of man and woman, as in Romeo and Juliet and Antony and Cleopatra. These title characters are defined not by their tense interior as seen in Hamlet and Othello. Certainly, Romeo and Juliet lack the psychological depth and complexity, as does Lear. Although not of the power of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, such as Macbeth, the following list of plays are not to be disparaged in favor of the others.
