Today, Shakespeare's histories are not as popular as his tragedies and comedies. Many people assume they are tedious textbook re-creations. Elizabethans, on the other hand, totally enjoyed them. Audiences were familiar with the events that unfolded on the stage and could readily identify the various political factions and complex family relationships depicted in the plays.
