Such great heroes as Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and Hamlet will always fail because their tragedy is that while they are great men capable of great deeds, they cannot withstand the inevitability of the character flaw that will bring about their own destruction. They are tragic heroes, doomed by the perilous conflict within their own hearts.
