Don't Set It and Forget It
What works today may not always work. Stay involved with your child's sensory diet and keep track of his sensory needs. Some strategies may lose their effectiveness after a certain period of use and need to be rotated out. Others may no longer be necessary as your child's sensory system becomes stronger. Work with your child's therapist to make sure that his sensory diet is well balanced and suited to his current needs.
As your child ages and becomes less needy, she may naturally switch from a formal sensory diet to the sort of athletic and at-home activities mentioned above. Be ready to serve as a resource for her in making that switch. The key is for her to be able to stay comfortable and alert throughout the day, however that needs to happen. A sensory diet is just one important tool in your toolbox.
