The fear of public meltdown may make you reluctant to take your child out into the community. At home, her environment can be carefully controlled, but outside, in the wide world, it's harder to make sure that her sensory systems get appropriate input. Rather than sheltering your child, try to make a certain amount of public activity part of her routine. The more she's exposed to it — in well-regulated, well-modulated doses, with a backup plan in place — the more she will be able to integrate it into her supply of sensory experiences.
