Analytical Versus Nonanalytical
While anyone of reasonable intelligence can be hypnotized, not everyone is hypnotized in the same manner. Although relaxation is the way that most people are hypnotized, not everyone is able to relax easily; therefore, different options are available for those people. Sessions must be tailored to the individual.
As previously mentioned, there are two major categories that people fall within: analytical or nonanalytical. Use the suggestibility tests in Chapter 3 to find which category best suits you. Very rarely will you find someone who is either 100 percent analytical or 100 percent nonanalytical. Most likely you'll find yourself somewhere on this scale between the two endpoints.
Analytical |Nonanalytical
On the suggestibility tests, if you followed the instructions and responded quickly and easily you would be placed on the nonanalytical side. The quicker that you responded to the suggestions, the more to the right side you would be. If you reacted slower to the suggestions, you would be placed more toward the center according to how slow or little you reacted. If you did not react to the suggestions or reacted very little, you would be placed on the analytical or left side of the center. If you reacted very little you would be placed more to the center, and if you did not react at all you would be more toward the left.
Take a few moments now to look at your results from the tests in Chapter 3 and place yourself on the scale according to your results. Now that you have found where you rank on the scale, the next step is in knowing how to decipher the information. Depending on which side of the scale you ended up on, this would tell you whether you need to use an analytical or nonanalytical approach. For a nonanalytical session, the more common type of relaxation session is all you will need. If you are on the analytical side, you will have to use an approach that will keep your mind busy.
Even though 80 percent of society is nonanalytical and only 20 percent is analytical, keep in mind that the analytical session works on anyone while the nonanalytical session may not. The reason for this is that not everyone can be relaxed; however, anyone can be kept busy.
There are a few simple procedures that must be followed in preparation for your session to begin. Find a quiet, out-of-the-way location where you will not be disturbed. Ensure you will not be interrupted by telephones, beepers, radios, or anything else that may distract you. Make sure all pets are out of the room as they may also disturb you during the session.
For safety reasons, it is important that you do not to listen to or participate in hypnosis sessions while driving a motor vehicle or operating any type of dangerous equipment. If you are simply listening to subliminal suggestions or affirmations while working, driving, or operating any type of dangerous equipment, be sure that they do not include the words sleep

Take a moment to get yourself comfortable in a chair, recliner, or couch, ensuring that your neck and head are supported. Be sure not to cross your arms or legs during the session as your body posture should be free-flowing and relaxed. It is better to place your arms either on the arms of your chair or on your lap.
