Myth 6: You'll Get Stuck in Hypnosis
The hypnotic state can be terminated at any time you chose. No matter how deep in hypnosis you are, if you had an urge to go to the bathroom, you can open your eyes and excuse yourself so you could go. You are always under your own control.
It's your choice to enter the hypnotic state, and you can always choose to leave it. If you were left in a deep hypnotic state by your hypnotherapist who decided to leave the room to go to lunch during the middle of your session, you would either return to full consciousness on your own or enter a natural sleep and awaken after a short pleasant nap.
There is no trance and you are not under anyone's power. That is merely Hollywood. There has never been a terminal case of hypnosis in the emergency room. Zombies are not under any type of hypnotic trance; they are fictitious characters.
Fact
The deepest state of hypnosis, which remains a mystery to most, is known as the hypnocoma state. This is a state of hypnosis that is so wonderful that even the sound of the hypnotherapist's voice is an annoyance and is often ignored by the client. It is also a state where the body seems to heal at an excessively higher speed.
On occasion there have been hypnotherapists, especially new ones to the field, who have reported that their clients had become stuck in hypnosis and they were not able to get them out of that state for several minutes and sometimes even longer. The reason for this condition is not that a subject was stuck, rather the subject was excessively relaxed and chose to remain there out of enjoyment. She chose to keep her eyes closed, but if the hypnotherapist told the client that he would leave her there for another hour and that he charges $200 per hour, the client would immediately open her eyes. Money, at times, can be a great motivator.
