One of the reasons the criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia are stringent, inclusive, and detailed is the need to make sure some other completely unrelated medical condition is not causing similar symptoms. Many medical conditions, psychiatric and otherwise, produce symptoms such as psychosis that can be confused with schizophrenia unless a careful examination of the patient is conducted.
