THE FIRST PRIORITY during an emergency is to determine whether anyone — patient, relative, or bystander — is in danger. If you feel you are in danger, leave and summon help. If you feel the patient is in danger of harming herself, try to reassure and calm her if you can defuse the situation without putting yourself or anyone else in danger. Once the immediate threat has passed, arrange professional help.
