Dressing for Success
People are sold, in part, through visual perceptions. A salesperson of $50,000 cars who dresses like poverty will be ignored. How salespeople look enhances or decreases the customer's perception of their professionalism.
That doesn't mean all salespeople should wear business suits. They aren't appropriate for all selling situations. However, salespeople should dress to impress. Following are some guidelines.
Select apparel, jewelry, and fragrances that don't detract from your professional image.
Make sure that your hair is clean, neat, and professionally styled.
Be sure that your apparel is clean, neatly pressed, and of the appropriate size.
Choose apparel that is more formal than that of your typical customer.
Keep colors and designs simple and not distracting.
Select clothing that draws attention to your face rather than your body.
There are many other guidelines, depending on what you sell and to whom. Your employer probably will have a dress code for salespeople. Invest in an assortment of quality, easy-to-maintain professional clothing and it will help you make a lasting first impression.
