Sales Career Success

That wasn't so difficult. Your resume and interview earned you an employment offer and you've accepted. Now what?

First, realize that finding the right job is similar to finding the right spouse. No matter how much research you do beforehand, there still are many aspects of the relationship that you don't yet understand. The key to developing a valuable relationship is understanding the power of compromise.

Compromise

To compromise is to mutually promise. Compromise isn't giving in; it's sharing. It's helping another reach goals as that person helps you reach yours. It's finding common grounds on which you can agree and respecting areas in which you cannot. It is a merger, a blend. It is how things are done successfully in both the business and personal worlds.

As you help your customers buy, as you help your employer sell, you will need to learn the value of compromise. No one gets his own way for very long. Uncompromising positions lead to gridlock, where nothing will get done — until there is compromise. Professional salespeople know this explicitly. They also know what is available for compromise and what is not.

Expectations

What do you expect from your sales job? What does your employer expect from you? These questions will be answered before you're hired. From that point, expectations may change, but they shouldn't do so significantly or easily. If you expect your employer to support your efforts, don't compromise that expectation. And if your employer expects you to put in a productive workday, don't compromise that expectation. Expect the best and give your best.
