Creating Positive Space
Everyone need to have an area or space where they can think, create, and do research. Some sales reps do these things well sitting at their desks, others think better when they're on the road. When creating your own positive space, think not only in terms of physical environments, but of less tangible areas of your life as well:
Home
Work
Car
Friendships
Health
Relaxation
Do you have a space in your home to which you can retreat and read, meditate, feel calm, or weather an emotional storm? Is there an area that is pretty to look at? Nurturing? Organized? Having an organized space really does help to reinforce and keep an organized mind.
Do you have an area in your workspace where you feel positive energy and can do what you need to, whether it's concentrating on certain tasks or making calls in privacy? Is your workspace organized? A disorganized or cluttered work area will impair your creativity to some degree.
You may want to use your car as an extension of your office. It allows for greater flexibility and helps you make better use of time when you have what you need for your next sales call right there. Also be sure to keep your car clean on the inside and outside—a clean car is much more calming than a messy one.
Do you find the people that you surround yourself with after hours, during lunch, on vacation, and at other times are draining your energy through criticism, looking at life from a pessimist's view, and generally giving off low energy or otherwise draining you? Or do they value you for being you, encourage you, and uplift your spirits?
How would you rate your health? Do you have energy at the end of most days or do you simply feel drained? Do you surround yourself with healthy food options? Do you make the time to put premium fuel in your body? How do you relax? Do you listen to TV news first or last thing in the evenings to relax, or do you listen to music you enjoy, or read inspirational books?
