A pilgrimage is a journey to a place that has been hallowed by prayer and the footsteps of the holy ones who once walked there. Pilgrimages were extremely popular in the Middle Ages, and have again come into the public consciousness because of the widespread phenomenon of apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
