Everyone wants a piece of the saints — quite literally. Strange as it may seem to modern sensibilities, Christians have long treasured the bodies of the saints, believing that their relics held life-giving properties. Likewise, it has been common practice to dig up the bodies of the saints after some time to examine them for corruption, because of the traditional understanding that the bodies of God's holy ones often remain intact, sometimes even emitting a sweet fragrance. This chapter will explore the historical and theological roots of relic-lore.
