Russian Cuisine: Basic Vocabulary

Traditional Russian cooking or is famous for its variety. Spanning two continents, Russia has developed a cuisine that creatively blends elements from various cultures. Its most famous dishes include borsch (beet soup), blini (thin pancakes), caviar, and vodka. Jewish, French, Ukrainian, Georgian, and Middle Asian influences are evident in many dishes. The staple foods include potatoes, wheat, cabbage, and various meats. The following is a partial list of foods and beverages common in the Russian diet.

You may already have many of these items in your kitchen. Practice saying the Russian words for these foods while shopping at your grocery store. To find authentic Russian food in your area, look up a Russian market in the phone book or online.
