Wearing and Caring for Your Running Shoes
One important aspect to consider in wearing running shoes is how you lace them. Lacing your shoes may sound like a silly thing to discuss, but how you do it can make a tremendous difference in how your feet feel in the shoes. Does your heel slip in your shoes? Does the top of your foot get irritated or fall asleep? If so, the following lacing remedies should help you.
For heel slippage, if your heel moves side to side or up and down, try using the shoe's lace lock. This will bring the heel of the shoe closer to your heel, alleviating the slipping.
If the top of your foot falls asleep or gets irritated, you may have a high instep. A high instep causes your foot to take up an excessive amount of space in your shoe. However, if your foot slides around in your shoe and tightening your laces doesn't fix the problem, you may have a narrow foot. In this case, purchase shoes from manufacturers that offer width-sizing options.
Fact
Lace locking to prevent heel slippage is something you can do with any pair of lace-up shoes. To do it, lace normally from the bottom all the way to the next-to-last eyelet. When you bring the lace out of that eyelet, instead of crossing over to the other one, go straight up to the top eyelet and bring the lace through to the back. Do this on both sides of the shoe. Bring the excess lace across and through the small tab you now have at the very top of the shoe, then tie your shoe. This will give you a tight fit at the ankle but not over the rest of your foot.
Take care of your running shoes, and they will take care of you. It's very important to make sure you keep your shoes in the best possible condition. Worn-out shoes can lead to unwelcome aches and pains or even injury. Follow these tips, and your feet and legs will thank you for it:
Wear your running shoes only for running—they will last much longer.
If your shoes become dirty, hand wash them with commercial shoe-care products rather than machine washing and drying them.
When your running shoes become wet, stick crumpled-up newspaper inside them to accelerate the drying time.
