Ultra-Running Events

The events comprising ultra-running vary greatly. The types of races and the way winners are determined are not always the same from race to race. The winners of some of the shorter ultra-marathons, such as the 50-mile races, are determined just like the popular distance races, from the mile race to the marathon: First to cross the finish line wins.

The other type is a fixed-time event. The parameter is given, such as 24 hours, 48 hours, or 6 days. The runner who runs the most miles within that time period wins. There are also point-to-point events.

Ultimately, there are no rules in ultra-running. You can stop to eat, rest, walk, and even sleep. It's fairly free and easy. The only penalty is that you are losing time doing these things while your competitors are running.

Fact

In the ultra-marathoning world, a series of races known as the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning is the most renowned. The big four races, run in the same year, that comprise the Grand Slam are: The Western States Endurance Run (100 Miles), the Vermont 100 Endurance Run, the Leadville Trail 100, and the Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run. If you complete all of these events in a year, as many ultra-marathoners aspire to do, you would log a total of 400 miles!
