Safety Tips for Women Runners
Though people like to think they live in an enlightened time when women are safe running by themselves, it's always a good idea to be aware of potentially unpleasant or dangerous situations. Here are common-sense suggestions to keep you safe. These tips also apply to men.
Don't run in isolated areas, particularly after dark.
Whenever possible, run with other people after dark.
Vary your running routine. Don't run in the same place at the same time on the same days.
Mix up your schedule so strangers can't anticipate when and where you run.
Tell a family member, roommate, or friend of your route and approximately what time you expect to return.
Bring a whistle, panic button device, or some other way to attract attention should a threat materialize.
If possible, learn some self-defense tactics.
