A wide variety of workouts encompass advanced training techniques. The most common workouts include hill repeats, fartlek runs, striders (also called pickups), tempo runs, and even road races. Integrated carefully into your training, such workouts make you a stronger and faster runner. Whereas speed workouts should be limited to those with a solid base of running, beginners can incorporate some of the techniques discussed in this chapter. Although all runners need to acknowledge their limitations so they don't push themselves too hard, too soon, incorporating a challenge keeps your running program from becoming too routine.
