Trip to the Veterinarian

Once you get your rottweiler, you should take him to the vet for a full checkup. Most reputable breeders and even shelters and breed rescues require that you have your rottweiler inspected within twenty-four to seventy-two hours. This ensures that the puppy or dog wasn't sick before leaving the breeder or shelter. It also ensures that your rottweiler will get vaccinated appropriately.

Your vet should discuss health care as well as your responsibility as a pet owner. He or she may recommend vaccinations or deworming. The vet may also discuss nutrition, training, grooming, and general care. He may recommend spaying or neutering, depending on if your rottweiler is a pet.

Before you take your rottweiler to the vet, call up the vet's office and find out if they would like you to bring his vaccination records, health records, and maybe a fecal sample (in a plastic bag). Many veterinary clinics like to have as much information as they can get on their new client.

While it's rare, puppies can and do have reactions to vaccinations. After each vaccination, watch your rottweiler for signs of an allergic reaction: swelling of the face and neck, swelling at the injection site, hives, or difficulty breathing. In all these cases, you should seek veterinary attention immediately.

Ask any and all questions you have about your rottweiler's health. Most vets have heard these questions before, and no question is stupid. Your vet can also advise you on all aspects of pet ownership. Veterinarians are a resource — use them!
