How to Give Your Dog Medicine
Most dogs hate taking medications, and rottweilers are no exception. If you must give medication in pill form, the easiest way is to slip the pill in a bit of cheese or meat and offer it to your dog. Most rotties will take the treat without stopping to chew. However, some are clever enough to eat the tidbit and spit out the pill.
If your dog has an infection in the eye, you will likely have to treat it with an ointment. To administer eye ointment, gently pull down your rottie's lower lid and squeeze the prescribed amount into the lid.
Other times, your dog may be so sick that he may refuse the food. In this case, open your rottweiler's mouth and place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible. Close his jaws and tilt his head back, while gently stroking his throat. Most dogs will swallow, although occasionally you may one that fakes a swallow and spits out the pill. In this case, try again. There are pet pillers on the market — you insert the pill in one end and then slide the piller into your dog's mouth. With a simple push of the plunger, the pill is delivered into the correct spot. Of course, you must be somewhat proficient at getting the piller to the back of the throat in order for it to be effective.
Liquids are somewhat easier to dispense. Ask your vet for a syringe or dropper to dispense the correct amount of liquid. Slip your finger behind your dog's lower lip at the back and open a small pouch to hold the liquid. Dispense the liquid into the pouch, and let your rottweiler swallow naturally.
