What Is an Etude?

Etude means “study” in French and comes from the old French term estudie. In music, etudes are training or instructional pieces used to teach a particular technique or style. The etudes in this chapter utilize the techniques, styles, and theoretical elements discussed in earlier chapters. Overall, they are practical exercises designed to test your skill and knowledge.

Despite the pedagogical nature of these etudes, it is hoped that you will find these pieces enjoyable to listen to. Try performing them in front of an audience. Performing is critical to your musical development. No audience? Why not play these pieces for your friends and family? All you need is a piano or keyboard and a living room.

In general, these etudes represent the culmination of the ideas, techniques, and concepts learned in Chapters 1–14. It's time to bring it all together into one big package. In other words, it's time to coalesce your knowledge.
